Supermarkets in North Shields: Where to Do Your Shopping
From the big Tesco Extra to a town-centre Asda and handy local convenience stores, a guide to supermarkets and grocery shopping in North Shields.
Wherever you live in North Shields, a good supermarket is never far away, from a full-size superstore for the big weekly shop to town-centre stores and local convenience branches for the top-ups. Here is a quick guide to where to do your grocery shopping in North Shields.
The big shop: Tesco Extra
For a full weekly shop, Tesco Extra on Norham Road at Chirton is the largest supermarket in the town. As well as the full grocery range it has F&F clothing, a pharmacy, an opticians, a café and a petrol station, all with a big free car park and long opening hours. It is the natural choice on the western side of North Shields.
Best for: Best for the big weekly shop, with everything under one roof and free parking.
In the town centre: Asda
Right in the heart of town on Saville Street, Asda is a town-centre superstore a short walk from the Beacon Centre and the Metro. It carries a full food range alongside George clothing and household goods, and its central spot makes it especially handy for anyone shopping without a car.
Best for: Best for a full shop in the town centre, easy to reach by Metro or bus.
Handy for a top-up
For the in-between shops, North Shields is well covered by smaller convenience stores. There are Co-op and other local branches dotted across the town and in neighbouring Cullercoats, a Morrisons Daily on Tynemouth Road, and various Sainsbury's Local and independent convenience stores. These are ideal for bread, milk and the odd forgotten item without a trip to the superstore.
Getting there
Both big stores are easy to reach by car, and Asda in particular is well placed for the Metro and town-centre bus routes. If you are carrying a big shop home without a car, the town-centre Asda and the local convenience stores are the most practical, while the Tesco Extra is best if you are driving.
