North Shields.live·

Yoga has quietly put down strong roots in North Shields, with a cluster of experienced independent teachers running classes for every level and need. The Linskill Centre alone is home to several of them, so wherever you are on your yoga journey there is a welcoming class nearby. Here is our guide to yoga in North Shields.

Newton Yoga and Posture

Run by the experienced teacher Tatiana Newton, Newton Yoga and Posture teaches at the Linskill Centre with a distinctive focus on posture and somatic movement. Rather than simply working up a sweat, the classes, which include somatic healing yoga and body-alignment yoga, are about helping you move and feel better in your body, which makes them a good fit if you carry tension or want to improve how you hold yourself.

Best for: Best for: posture, alignment and mindful, therapeutic movement.

Sarah McLusky Yoga

Also at the Linskill Centre, Sarah McLusky Yoga offers friendly, inclusive hatha yoga with a refreshingly down-to-earth ethos, summed up by her description of the class as a no-headstand zone. Alongside general classes she teaches accessible and chair-based yoga, opening the practice up to a wide range of ages, bodies and abilities.

Best for: Best for: inclusive, accessible yoga where everyone is welcome.

Yoga with Clare

Yoga with Clare, again at the Linskill Centre, runs welcoming hatha classes with a real emphasis on beginners, making it an easy place to take your very first class. Pregnancy yoga is offered too, giving expectant mothers gentle, supportive movement and breathing.

Best for: Best for: complete beginners and pregnancy yoga.

Classes at the leisure centre

If you prefer a leisure-centre setting, The Parks Sports Centre on Howdon Road includes yoga and pilates in its studio class programme, bookable through the North Tyneside Council system. It is worth checking the live timetable for the current week's sessions. Just to the east, the Tynemouth studios add even more choice a short distance away.

Getting started

Most classes welcome beginners and many teachers offer a taster or a discounted block of weeks, so the best approach is to try one or two and see which teacher and style suit you. For more local wellbeing, see our guide to martial arts in North Shields.
