Low Quay Brew Co. opens container kitchen and outdoor space on the Fish Quay
North Shields brewery Low Quay Brew Co. has opened a converted 40ft container kitchen and expanded covered seating, the latest addition to the Fish Quay food-and-drink scene.
North Shields brewery Low Quay Brew Co. has opened a new outdoor space at its Northumberland Street home, built around a converted 40ft shipping container fitted out as a bar and kitchen, with covered and open-air seating for around 65 people.
The independent brewery, a short way up from the Fish Quay, started brewing after a conversation between its founders following a 2023 Sam Fender gig. It has since become part of the cluster of independent drinking spots that has grown up around this stretch of the river, and the new space gives it room to spread out over the warmer months.
What's new
The container houses an additional bar and a kitchen, with a canopy over part of the seating turning the yard into what the owners describe as a sun trap. The kitchen runs a seasonal, rotating menu built around sandwiches, small plates and sides, served alongside the brewery's own beers, including its flagship hazy pale ale, plus wine, spirits, cocktails and coffee.
Best for: Low Quay Brew Co. is at 3 Northumberland Street, a short walk up from North Shields Fish Quay.
Part of a growing scene
The opening adds to the momentum around the Fish Quay and the streets above it, where former industrial and commercial buildings have steadily been turned into bars, taprooms and kitchens. Low Quay itself occupies a former motor-company garage, and the outdoor space is the latest sign of a town-centre and riverside food-and-drink scene that keeps finding new corners to fill.
For anyone following North Shields' independent beer scene, it is a welcome addition to a town with a long brewing and ale-house history, and a good spot to catch the afternoon sun with a pint brewed on the premises.
The first look at the new space was reported by High Life North. Opening hours run Thursday to Sunday, so it is worth checking the brewery's own channels before heading down.
