Skate Parks in North Shields

Skateboarding, scooting and BMX are brilliant ways for children and teenagers to stay active, build confidence and make friends, and North Shields is lucky to have a genuinely good free skatepark of its own. Here is our guide to skate parks in and around North Shields.

North Shields Skatepark

The town's main facility is North Shields Skatepark on Howdon Road, owned by North Tyneside Council and free to use. Designed and built by specialists and opened in 2010, it is a large all-concrete park with a good spread of street obstacles, including hubbas, rails, ledges and a manny pad, along with two speed bowls, one with a steeper over-vert section.

There is also a dedicated BMX area with its own bowls, ramps and walls, so bikes and boards each have their space. Meadow Well Metro is only a short walk or skate away, making it easy to reach without a car.

Making the most of it

As a free, open park it is busiest after school, at weekends and in the school holidays. Helmets and pads are strongly recommended, particularly for younger or less experienced skaters, and it is a friendly spot where beginners can learn alongside more experienced riders. Quieter daytime sessions are ideal for those just starting out.

Along the coast

If you fancy a change of scene, there are more skate facilities a short distance away along the coast in the wider North Tyneside area, around Whitley Bay and beyond. But for a proper local session, the Howdon Road park is hard to beat.
