AJ Bell Great North Run 2026
The world's biggest half marathon returns. Thousands of runners follow the iconic 13.1-mile route from Newcastle's city centre to the coast at South Shields.
About This Event
The AJ Bell Great North Run is the world's largest half marathon and one of the most iconic sporting events in the North East calendar. Every September, tens of thousands of runners tackle the 13.1-mile route from Newcastle's city centre, across the Tyne Bridge, through Gateshead, and along the coast road to the spectacular seafront finish in South Shields. The event transforms the region for the day, roads close, crowds line the entire route, and the atmosphere is electric. Whether you are running, spectating, or volunteering, the Great North Run is a defining North East experience. The route passes through multiple neighbourhoods and the finish area at South Shields seafront becomes a huge celebration. Note: significant road closures affect Newcastle, Gateshead, and South Shields throughout the day. Plan journeys accordingly. The Metro is the best way to get around on race day.
