Getting Married in North Shields
Planning a North Shields wedding? Our guide to getting married in the town, from the Grade II listed register office overlooking the Tyne to approved ceremony venues, reception spaces and local suppliers, plus North East wedding fairs.
North Shields makes a characterful place to get married, with the river and the Fish Quay on the doorstep, a handsome Grade II listed register office looking out over the Tyne, and a growing cluster of independent suppliers in the town's cultural quarter. Whether you want a small civil ceremony or a full day with a reception, here is a practical guide to tying the knot in North Shields, with the local, verified suppliers to help you do it.
Where to say your vows
For a civil ceremony, the North Tyneside Register Office is in Maritime Chambers, a Grade II listed building of 1806 at 1 Howard Street, overlooking the river. It has three ceremony rooms: the Tyne View Room on the first floor for up to around seventy guests, the smaller River Suite for about sixteen, and the Register Office Room for the couple and their witnesses. Marriages, civil partnerships, renewal of vows and naming ceremonies are all held here by appointment.
If you would rather marry at a licensed venue, two North Shields buildings are North Tyneside approved premises for civil ceremonies: The Exchange 1856 on Howard Street and The Linskill Centre near the town centre. For a church wedding, Christ Church on Preston Road is the historic Anglican parish church of North Shields, consecrated in 1668; contact the parish office to discuss banns and dates.
Reception venues
For the celebration afterwards, The Exchange 1856 hosts both ceremonies and receptions in its vaulted Loft and larger stalls-level space, and lets you bring in your own caterer and stylist. On the Fish Quay, Salt Market Social offers a relaxed, industrial warehouse setting for around ninety to a hundred and sixty guests, while The Linskill Centre has the large Trevelyan Hall with its own bar and outdoor space.
Suppliers
- Photography. Vita House Studio is a professional photography studio right on the Fish Quay, offering wedding photography a short walk from the register office and quayside venues.
- Flowers. Pansy's Florist on Nile Street and Andreas Florists on Billy Mill Avenue are both long-established local florists doing wedding bouquets and arrangements.
- Bridalwear. MRS W, inside The Exchange 1856, is a contemporary bridal studio stocking modern, design-led wedding dresses.
- A personal ceremony. For a non-religious wedding built entirely around you, Rachael Meyer is a Humanists UK celebrant based in North Shields who writes and leads bespoke ceremonies across the North East.
Wedding fairs
Wedding fairs are a good way to meet venues and suppliers in one visit and gather ideas. They run across the North East through the year, with the busiest season from January to February and another cluster in the autumn. Upcoming fairs in the area appear on our events calendar, and North East Alive keeps a wider North East wedding fairs roundup covering venues from the coast to the Tyne Valley and County Durham.
We add verified local suppliers as we confirm them, so check back as the North Shields wedding directory grows. If you run a genuine North Shields or North Tyneside wedding business, do get in touch and we will be glad to consider listing you.
