North Shields.live·

Finding the right tutor in North Shields is less about the high street and more about knowing where to look. A lot of the town's teaching happens in shared spaces: the old school building at the Linskill Centre, church and community halls along Howard Street, and a music school in the town centre. Whether your child needs a lift with maths and English, wants to learn guitar, or is desperate to get on a stage, this guide covers the genuine local options and how to choose between them.

Start with our Tutors page, which gathers local tutors and tuition providers across academic subjects, music, arts, dance and sport. We add to it as we verify new providers, so it is worth checking back. Maths and English Tuition

Kumon North Shields

Kumon North Shields meets at the Linskill Centre on Linskill Terrace (NE30 2AY), run by instructor Faiqa Ali. The Kumon method is built on short, daily worksheets: children attend the centre and then work at home every day, progressing in small steps from a starting point set by an initial assessment rather than by their school year group. Sessions run on Monday afternoons and Saturday mornings, with students usually spending around half an hour per subject, and the centre covers both maths and English from early learners to secondary age.

It suits children who respond to routine and steady practice. It is less suited to a pupil who needs targeted help with a specific GCSE topic next month, where one-to-one tuition is usually the better fit.

Best for: Best for: building maths and English confidence through daily, structured practice.

One-to-one academic tutors

North Shields does not currently have a large high-street tuition centre of the kind found in Gosforth or Whitley Bay, so for subject-specific help most families turn to freelance tutors. National platforms such as Tutorful, Personal Tutors and First Tutors all list tutors covering North Shields, many offering lessons in your home or online. Quality varies widely on these sites, so the checks further down this guide matter.

Best for: Best for: GCSE and A-level subject help, exam technique and flexible timings.

Music Lessons

Yamaha Music School North Shields

Yamaha Music School North Shields opened at 2 Russell Street (NE29 0BJ) in January 2025, a sister site to the long-running Yamaha school in Blyth. Courses include piano and keyboard, guitar, drums and percussion, woodwind and brass, music theory and music production, taught one-to-one, in groups or as a band. The school also runs ensembles that give learners a reason to keep practising, including the North Shields Guitar Orchestra and the North Shields Folk Orchestra, plus end-of-term student concerts. Staff are often mid-lesson, so the school asks for a text or WhatsApp rather than a call.

Best for: Best for: children and adults who want lessons plus a band or orchestra to play in.

Anna Leigh Vocal Studios

Anna Leigh Vocal Studios, also based at the Linskill Centre, has been teaching singing in North Shields since 2010. Anna Leigh started the studio at 21 and the studio now has other teachers alongside her, working with singers from complete beginners through to professionals, in the studio and online over Zoom. Students get the chance to perform at the studio's concerts and to record, which is a big confidence builder for nervous singers.

Best for: Best for: singing lessons, audition preparation and performance confidence.

Dance and Drama

Jade Harrison School of Dance

Jade Harrison School of Dance has been at 242 New York Road since 2006, in a purpose-built building with two studios and a small on-site theatre. Classes start at age three and cover ballet, tap, lyrical contemporary, musical theatre and acrobatic arts. The school is accredited with the Royal Academy of Dance, the International Dance Teachers Association and Acrobatic Arts, so pupils can work through recognised graded exams.

Best for: Best for: graded ballet and tap exams in a dedicated dance building.

Stages School of Dance

Stages School of Dance has taught in North Shields since 1984 and runs classes from Tasker Hall on Howard Street. The timetable is broad: ballet, modern and jazz, tap, contemporary, lyrical, acro, commercial freestyle and musical theatre, with dedicated classes for three to five year olds and options for older students and adults.

Best for: Best for: a long-established town-centre school with a wide mix of styles.

Ramsey's Theatre Stars

Ramsey's Theatre Stars on Howard Street runs termly acting classes for children, with a drop-in "Diddy" session for younger ones and a dedicated daytime class for home-educated children. Terms build up to a Christmas show, and the school also takes on school workshops and TV and stage work.

Best for: Best for: children who want to act, and home-educating families looking for a weekday drama class.

How to Choose a Tutor

  • Check the DBS. Anyone teaching your child one-to-one should hold a current enhanced DBS certificate. Centres and schools handle this as standard; with a freelance tutor, ask to see it before the first lesson.
  • Ask about qualifications. For academic subjects, look for a degree in the subject or qualified teacher status. For music and dance, ask which exam boards the teacher prepares pupils for (ABRSM, Trinity, RAD and IDTA are the common ones).
  • Book a trial or assessment. Most providers will offer an initial assessment or taster session. Use it to see whether your child gets on with the teacher, not just whether the method sounds right.
  • Agree how progress is reported. A good tutor tells you what they are working on and what has improved, rather than simply turning up.
  • Think about the journey. Several of the options above cluster around the town centre and Howard Street, which makes it easy to combine lessons with a trip to the library or the shops.
