Meditation in North Shields

From a dedicated meditation studio on Howard Street to a donation-based mindfulness drop-in at the library, here is where to learn and practise meditation in North Shields and nearby.

North Shields.live·

Meditation does not need a mountain retreat. In North Shields you can learn to sit still and breathe in a studio a few doors from Northumberland Square, at a community drop-in in the library, or on a gentle yoga mat at the Linskill Centre. With the river and the coast on the doorstep, there is also no shortage of quiet places to practise once you have the basics.

This guide covers the regular, currently running options in and around the town. Timetables change from term to term, so always check with the organiser before you go.

Dedicated meditation classes

Peace of Mind Meditation, Howard Street

Peace of Mind Meditation is the town's dedicated meditation studio, based at The Studio for Peace of Mind on Howard Street in the Georgian heart of North Shields. Its founder trained with the British School of Meditation, and the teaching is secular and practical, aimed at people who want calmer minds and better sleep rather than a particular belief system.

The studio runs short, termly meditation and breathwork courses. Its autumn 2026 "Winter Retreat" course is a four-week block of 75-minute sessions starting in the week of 9 November, with Monday and Wednesday evening groups and a Tuesday lunchtime group, and drop-ins are offered when space allows. Alongside the courses there are mindful yoga sessions, one-to-one meditation, online memberships and free taster meditations, which are a sensible first step if you are not sure meditation is for you.

Best for: Best for beginners who want a structured course with a teacher, right in the town centre.

Mindful Space at North Shields Library

Mindful Therapies, a Newcastle-based mental health charity, has run a weekly "Mindful Space" drop-in at North Shields Community Hub and Library on Northumberland Square. Sessions take place on Tuesday afternoons, last around an hour and a half, and are designed for complete beginners, with guided practice and time to talk about how it is going.

The sessions are donation-based, with a small suggested contribution, which makes this one of the most affordable ways to build a regular habit. The charity's timetable is the place to confirm the current day and time before setting off.

Best for: Best for anyone on a tight budget who wants a friendly, regular weekly group.

Buddhist meditation

Compassion Kadampa Buddhist Centre, South Gosforth

There is no Buddhist centre in North Shields itself, but Compassion Kadampa Buddhist Centre on Station Road in South Gosforth is the nearest established one, and the Metro runs there from North Shields without a change, round the coast via Whitley Bay, to South Gosforth station a few steps away. Part of the New Kadampa Tradition, it runs drop-in meditation classes through the week that are open to everyone, regardless of faith or experience, along with day courses and retreats.

Classes combine guided meditation with a short talk on Buddhist ideas such as patience and kindness, and no booking is generally needed for regular sessions. Check the centre's own schedule before travelling, as class days vary through the year.

Best for: Best for those curious about the Buddhist roots of meditation and happy to travel.

Yoga with a mindful focus

Many people find their way into meditation through yoga, and the Linskill Centre is the town's yoga hub. Newton Yoga and Posture teaches posture-focused, somatic yoga that puts a lot of attention on breath and body awareness. Sarah McLusky Yoga runs inclusive, accessible hatha and chair yoga, and Yoga with Clare offers beginners' hatha and pregnancy yoga.

None of these are meditation classes as such, but a slow, breath-led yoga class is a gentle way to practise paying attention, especially if sitting still for long periods is hard. Our yoga in North Shields guide has more on each teacher.

Best for: Best for people who find it easier to quieten the mind while moving.

Quiet places to practise

Once you have learned a technique, practising regularly matters more than where you do it. North Shields has plenty of calm spots. Christ Church on Preston Road, the town's parish church since 1668, is a peaceful place for reflection when it is open for services and events. Northumberland Park, on the edge of Tynemouth, and the riverside paths below the Fish Quay are good for walking meditation, and our guide to parks and green spaces in North Shields lists more.

If you are struggling

Meditation can help with everyday stress, but it is not a substitute for proper support if you are dealing with anxiety or low mood. Adults registered with a North Tyneside GP can refer themselves to the NHS talking therapies service for the borough, and our guide to counsellors and therapists in North Shields covers other options.

Tips for getting started

  • Start small. Five or ten minutes a day is more useful than an hour once a month.
  • Try a taster first. Several teachers offer a free or low-cost first session.
  • Wear comfortable layers. Rooms can be cool, and you will be sitting still.
  • Do not worry about a busy mind. Noticing your thoughts wandering is part of the practice, not a sign of failure.
